THE WOOD: TECHNIQUES AND DESIGN (06/05/2016)
Wood is the core of my interests. I create artifacts looking for new solutions to everyday needs. I try to pass on my knowledge by teaching at my lab-school. Who am I? I would say I’m a refugee of the liberal arts, with a degree in History of the Renaissance that is getting dusty along with a thesis to be published (on the guilds of carpenters). A person convinced that as long as there is a chance to learn it is worth living. That is why my laboratory has always been open to everyone until it has become a real school where teaching how to make good use of wood. There is not much to say about the rest. Restoration was my starting point. I was lucky enough to start working on pieces dated back from ’400 and '500. So I approached all the artisanal techniques related to the production of furniture and art objects, from joinery to intaglio carving and gliding. I’ve improved my skills with thousands of hours of experience in dilapidated (or characteristic, if you prefer) spaces, until I landed in the current laboratory-school; it is bright, wide and situated in the center of Viterbo. Now I split my time between design and teaching. I’m not that into restoration at the moment because it doesn’t allow you to be so creative and I love to work with my imagination. I rather use traditional techniques to create different objects but always in the name of functionality. I should say that I'm a designer-maker but I think the term investigator is more elastic and it describes much better the things I do. I mainly work with wood but I often experiment contamination with metals, rubber, cement and other materials.
