YOUR FIRST JAPANESE PRINT (22/11/2017)

In the lovely old center of Aviglana Mara has a small but beautiful decorated workshop where she taught me how to do the basics of Japanese printing. She has a lot of patience, can tell everything about the art culture in Japan an has a lot of passion for her craft. I wanten to make some prints for one of my books and she was totally in for skme experimenting.
The workshop of Mara is one of the pearls of Italian Stories!

THE STORY

My atelier is located at the heart of the medieval village of Avigliana. It is an amazing small town very close to Turin. I have always been living there, and finally in December 2015 I realized my dream and I opened my atelier.
I've always been interested in etching techniques, and for a long period I practiced copper engraving. Then, five years ago, looking for a more environmentally friendly technique, I found out the Japanese Xilography that has become my job and passion.
It is the exact same method used by the ancients to create the well-known prints Ukiyo-e. Nowadays it is moving more and more artists from all over the world, fascinated by the creative opportunities in addition to the eco-friendly impact.
Come to visit me in my atelier and you'll discover the magic and charm beyond this technique. The wood molds are etched by hand. Later they are manually printed with water colors, without using the printing press.
You will find out everything you've ever wanted to know about these beautiful prints. All the materials and the processes needed to create them, and why not to try to create something by your own!!
