THE SECRETS OF TERRACOTTA (16/07/2015)

THE SECRETS OF TERRACOTTA (16/06/2015)

THE STORY

Our business started in 1934, when we took over one of the oldest kilns in the area of Impruneta, creating in that way a dynasty of kiln men.
The furnace has a bit dark but very picturesque setting, in which earth, water and fire are used wisely to get artifacts of great value. Our craftsmen work the clay according to the ancient tradition: a vase may be shaped “a “calco”, so modeling the clay on chalk’s molds; or through the “lavor tondo” technique where the clay is added to "a bug" from the outer surface: in this case it is the man who runs around the mold. But the oldest and more difficult technique is the one of “lavoro fondato”, that only a few craftsmen are able to adopt: there are no molds, but only drawings and measurements.
Our production is focused on pottery products such as pots, bowls, boxes, statues, vases and many other patio furniture, all made according to the dictates of ancient tradition and entirely made by hand.
Currently the company has more than 450 models of all sizes and types, ranging from classic to modern ones. Unique objects of exceptional beauty and great resistance to adverse weather.
In our furnace you will find craftsmen who keep the ability, creativity, but also the dedication and passion of their ancestors.

EXPERIENCES WITH MARCO

VISIT

THE SECRETS OF TERRACOTTA

Marco, kiln

12

To anyone who is passionate about pottery or just curious, we offer a guided tour inside and outside our furnace, that will last about 30-40 minutes. During the visit, we will explain and show, whenever possible, all stages of production of a handmade pottery. The visit will begin on the outside, we will show you how and where the soil is taken to be processed and how it is cooked before being sold. We will unveil the secrets of an ancient art, the working techniques, from the most common to the most ancient and challenging. After this visit, the firm belief that "some water, some soil, and that's it" will disappear forever, and you will understand that in a single terracotta artifact there is the story of a man.
