HOW THE EXPERIENCE WILL BE

The workshop includes a short presentation of the work of the milliner and hatmaker, in which the different spaces of the atelier are shown, and the different activities that are carried out there. Then we move on to the making phase, which is organized as follows: 1 hour of preparing the hat shape (possible materials: sisal, straw or felt) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; lunch break circa 2 hours, and then from 2 to 5 p.m. we will work to finish and decorate the hat made previously.
This particular type of craftsmanship involves fixing the hat shape in a kind of oven. This procedure requires a break time between the first stage of work and the next one, during which the work will be refined and finished.

SOME TIPS

All materials are provided by the company, but if you want you can also bring some personal decorations to apply to the hat in the final stage. Dress comfortably and bring your imagination and creativity with you!

Not many people know how to make a hat, which are the steps to get to the final product, creating it by hand, with the help of a few tools, an object that will be appreciated by those who recognize the true craftsmanship. We will show you the whole process, from the wooden shape to the finished hat. The experience will last about one hour.

LEARN ABOUT THE INLAY CRAFT

Renato, inlayer

54

During this 2 hours visit inside the old workshop, you will learn about the intaglio carving craft, appreciating especially the technique commonly known as "foro-controforo". You will participate in a practical demonstration during which all the various traditional stages of production will be displayed: we will start with the preparation of woods before going through the cut stage carried out with a small arch, then we will proceed with the assembly and sandblasting just before the glueing and then finish with the French polishing. Moreover, we will discuss about other inlay techniques such as the so-called "a toppo" and "a buio".

WORKSHOP

GILDING ON WOOD

Stefania & Carlo, restorers

69

We will work together for about one hour, depending on the number of participants. We will begin with a brief introduction to the art of gilding, in which we will introduce you to the materials and decorative techniques by which you can understand the historical placements of the object. We will explain how gouache and mission gilding works and give some hints about the techniques of restoration of gilded and lacquered wooden works. For the practical part, you will get to try mission gilding of a small wooden object of Florentine manufacture and its subsequent aging. The wooden object provided by the school for rehearsal will be given to you free of charge as a memento of your visit.
