HOW THE EXPERIENCE WILL BE

We will tell you about the history and the state of art of this ancient, and somehow "lost" craft, showing you some secrets and some stylistic and technical aspects. Starting from a "simple mineral dust", with a practical exhibition we will took you back in time, when the ability and skills of the craftsman began with the preparation of the tools, the sketches and the color pigments. The realized artwork remains yours.
Finally we will discuss together about the most important existing collection, with the practical support of some antique pieces, dating from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, collected with great passion by our family.

SOME TIPS

• this experience is suitable for everyone
• visit in English are available on request at additional cost
• we have aprons and gloves for the practice

REALIZE YOUR INLAY

Renato, inlayer

During the 24 hours course (4h per day from Monday to Saturday, in the morning or afternoon) you will realize some inlay works experimenting different traditional techniques. At the end of the course you will bring home the artifacts and most of all you will have the knowledge you’ll need to create other brand new works on your own.

WORKSHOP

YOUR CUSTOM-MADE HAT

Renato, milliner

360

The workshop includes a short presentation of the work of the milliner and hatmaker, in which the different spaces of the atelier are shown, and the different activities that are carried out there. Then we move on to the making phase, which is organized as follows: 1 hour of preparing the hat shape (possible materials: sisal, straw or felt) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; lunch break circa 2 hours, and then from 2 to 5 p.m. we will work to finish and decorate the hat made previously. This particular type of craftsmanship involves fixing the hat shape in a kind of oven. This procedure requires a break time between the first stage of work and the next one, during which the work will be refined and finished.

WORKSHOP

GILDING ON WOOD

Stefania & Carlo, restorers

69

We will work together for about one hour, depending on the number of participants. We will begin with a brief introduction to the art of gilding, in which we will introduce you to the materials and decorative techniques by which you can understand the historical placements of the object. We will explain how gouache and mission gilding works and give some hints about the techniques of restoration of gilded and lacquered wooden works. For the practical part, you will get to try mission gilding of a small wooden object of Florentine manufacture and its subsequent aging. The wooden object provided by the school for rehearsal will be given to you free of charge as a memento of your visit.
