The Hat Museum (more precisely “Museum of the Art of Hat-making”) in Ghiffa, overlooking Lake Maggiore, illustrates the history of Italian glamour in hat-making.
What is now the Museum was once the factory where the hats of the historic Panizza brand were made. This internationally famous company exported its hats of a unique style and quality all over the world from 1881 till 1981.
The exhibition is arranged thematically. The first part takes visitors on a chronological tour of hat history, including examples of today’s fashion leaders; you can see the unmistakable top hat of the Romantic period, and the classic hat linked with the name of Rudolph Valentino, which was all the rage in the Twenties.
The second section is devoted to Panizza’s own production, with evergreens such as the Safari hat, or the Texas, famous as a symbol of Western movies.
The exhibition includes the machinery used in making the hats, along with filmed sequences illustrating how hats were made: a skilled craft whose products are nothing short of works of art.
You can also apreciate in the Museum some different hats from all over the world, a collection donated by the family Vittorio Fesce

SIMONA, BREEDING AND WOOL PRODUCTION
WORKSHOP FOR DYEING AND WORKING WOOL
An entire day dedicated to wool and your own creativity. The movements used to thread wool are very old and well studied; during the duration of our course we will analyze two different types of wool: one from an alpaca and one from a sheep and learn the proprieties of each in turn. We will also be coloring the wool with objects that are 100% natural. In the end we will create something fun allowing your creativity to run free. At 9:30 am you are welcome to visit our alpacas, then we will analyze the two different wools (sheep and alpaca). Preparing and learning about natural coloring methods • Lunch • Learning how to thread the wool • Dyeing our wool • Making our own creation with the dyed product.
